Sinn Fein Raises Lifting of Beef Ban in Dáil

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD will raise in the Dáil this morning the lifting of the ban on Brazilian beef imports. The Kerry North TD was responding to yesterday’s announcement by the EU Health Commissioner that beef would be accepted from a list of over 100 Brazilian farms which the Brazilian authorities claim are in compliance with EU standards of health and safety. The Dáil will this week debate a Private Members Motion tabled jointly by Labour and Sinn Fein TDs expressing concern at the treatment of agency workers, including vulnerable migrant workers, who are being subjected to inferior pay and conditions and exploitation. Jobs losses in Arnotts disgraceful in time of retail trade pick-up

Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan has slammed Arnotts owners for letting go 580 staff on the same day that new figures showed retail sales were picking up strongly. Morgan said that it was apparent that the company had showed a complete lack of responsibility to its employees. Following a request from Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris the IDA has agreed to meet with the four North Kerry Oireachtas members to discuss the ongoing jobs crisis in the county. Deputy Ferris recently wrote to the Chief Executive of the IDA requesting a meeting on the back of the most recent job losses at Tillotson and Swiss Wire in Tralee. Border counties least equipped to deal with job losses – Ó Caoláin

Sinn Féin Cavan-Monaghan TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has described the loss of 130 jobs at Grove Turkeys, Smithboro, Co. Monaghan as “a bad blow for the people of Co. Monaghan and the Border region”. He said there was an onus on the Minister for Agriculture and Food and the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to address the “development deficit” in the region. View more
