Parlon CIF appointment raises serious ethical questions

Reacting to the announcement that former PD junior Minister Tom Parlon who lost his seat at the last election is taking up a position as Director General of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD said that the move demonstrated the necessity for post service restrictions on former government minister and senior civil servants to prevent them unethically utilising knowledge from their public employment to the benefit of the private sector. Government must take responsibility for scale of mortgage debt – SF

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing Arthur Morgan said that the scale of mortgage debt revealed in a department of environment report today did not surprise him. Sinn Féin according to Morgan repeatedly challenged the Government over recent years on their repeated claims that their were no affordability problems in the housing market and in relation to the fact that first time buyers were precariously over-borrowing for overpriced houses. Public representatives must listen to the views of trade unionists – Morgan

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Workers Rights Arthur Morgan TD today attended the third day of the biannual conference of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. Speaking from the conference in Bundoran Arthur Morgan said it was important that public representatives listened to what the trade unions were saying. He reiterated Sinn Fein’s commitment to work with the trade union movement on key areas of social and economic concerns to union members. View more

Morgan exposes Fine Gael hypocrisy on incineration

Sinn Féin Environment Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has said in their haste to highlight the Green Party’s u-turn in their policy on incineration Fine Gael have exposed their own hypocrisy on the issue. Tackling educational disadvantage must be prioritised – Morgan

Speaking this morning, Sinn Féin’s Arthur Morgan TD said Ireland’s educational apartheid must be tackled if this government has any aspiration of ensuring a more inclusive and fairer society. Speaking ahead of the publication of a report from the Higher Education Authority which is expected to confirm that students from poorer backgrounds are at a disadvantage Deputy Morgan said Ireland’s Celtic Tiger economy has failed to address educational disadvantage which remains a blight on the record of Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats. Focus on construction of social housing needed – Morgan

Responding the claims by the Construction Industry Federation that a slowdown in output of housing in and the granting of planning permissions would mean that housing shortages get worse, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing Arthur Morgan TD said that the key question was not the number of houses being built but who was acquiring the newly built houses. Morgan argued that housing output needed to be focused on delivering for those attempting to acquire their first home and those on social housing waiting lists. View more

Minister must assure his constituents that there will be no incinerator on the Poolbeg Peninsula – Morgan

Sinn Féin Environment Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has called on the new Green Party Minister for the Environment John Gormley to give an assurance to his constituents in Dublin South East that an incinerator will not be built on the Poolbeg Peninsula. Deputy Morgan was speaking today after Dublin City Council confirmed that they have negotiated a deal with a Danish firm to design, build and operate an incinerator if planning permission is granted. Morgan calls for Eircom workers to be paid increase

Speaking following reports that the Communication Workers Union are to ballot for industrial action in a dispute over payment under the national wage agreement, Sinn Fein spokesperson on workers rights Deputy Arthur Morgan called on owners of the telecom company Babcock and Brown to pay the 2% increase the workers are due under the terms of the Social Partnership Agreement, Towards 2016. Sinn Féin committed to standing by unions in the battle to save ESB

Speaking after ESB management announced that it is to seek approval from its board to close three power stations within three years Sinn Féin’s Workers’ Rights spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD urged ESB management to ensure that proper and full consultation takes place with the estimated 300 staff affected and warned against the bigger picture of the Government’s overall plan of bringing fresh competition into the market which will have serious repercussions for both citizens and employees. Government’s stamp duty proposals will not make housing more affordable– Morgan

Following the publication of the Government’s Finance (No. 2) Bill allowing for the abolition of stamp duty for first time buyers, Sinn Fein spokesperson on housing Deputy Arthur Morgan described the Bill was “deeply flawed” and “ill- thought out”.
